On September 19th Alexander Babakov, Vice-Speaker of State Duma of the Russian Federation, said that when Belarus recognizes Abkhazia and South Ossetia, they will be permitted to join the Union State, and in perspective – CSTO as well as Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He expressed confidence of the fact that further recognition of these republics by other states “will be quiet and steady’.

“At present the world community has no in the least bit downright or integral claims to these new independent states. We can observe gradual transition to the predominance of a constructive approach to the assessment of the events in the Caucasus by the East European states – Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ukraine. And this is an irreversible process,” said Vice-Speaker of the State Duma.

“After its parliamentary elections Belarus which is our closest friend and ally will recognize these new independent states one way or another. There should be no problems as we and Belarus interpret the events taking place in the Caucasus practically in the same way. Recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia by Belarus will enable these republics to join the Union State, and in perspective – CSTO, CIS as well as Shanghai Cooperation Organization,” he noted.

At the same time, Alexander Babakov observed that “the process of recognition should not prevail over the chief aim – safeguarding peaceful life and wellbeing of Abkhazian and South Ossetian citizens.
